Material Converter

Data sheet to ANSYS, in one click.

Free & open sourceNo accountStays in your browser

Open a material on MatWeb, click the toolbar button, press Add to library. The material lands in an ANSYS Engineering Data library, already in SI units. No more copying values by hand.

popup — Aluminum 7075-T6
The Material Converter panel on a MatWeb page for Aluminum 7075-T6: in library, 8 properties go to ANSYS, with an Update in library button and the library file MatWeb_ANSYS_Library.xml in Downloads/ANSYS/Materials
8 properties → ANSYSSaved to one library file

How it works

Copying properties by hand means unit conversions, ranges, temperature tables and typos. Material Converter does all of that for you.

1_open
MatWebOpen a data sheet

Any material page on MatWeb, like Aluminum 7075-T6 or AISI 4140.

2_add
Add to libraryClick once

The panel shows how many properties go to ANSYS and warns you if something is missing.

3_connect
WorkbenchConnect ANSYS once

Add the library file under Engineering Data → Engineering Data Sources. Only the first time.

4_refresh
RefreshKeep going

Every new material goes into the same file. Refresh the library in ANSYS and it's there.

library.html — Materials
The library page: the ANSYS library file path, categories on the left and a list of materials with their ANSYS status
Search, sort, group into categories, open the source page
library.html — Setup & settings
The setup page: choose the library file location in Downloads, then the steps to register it in ANSYS Workbench
Pick where the file goes, then follow the steps for ANSYS

What goes to ANSYS

Values are read straight from the page, converted to SI units and written in the Engineering Data format Workbench reads.

property_map.xml
On MatWebIn ANSYSConversion
Density→Densityg/cc → kg/m³
Modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio→Isotropic Elasticityν from the shear modulus if it's missing
Tensile yield / ultimate strength→Tensile Yield / Ultimate StrengthMPa → Pa
Compressive yield / strength→Compressive Yield / Ultimate StrengthMPa → Pa
CTE, linear→Coefficient of Thermal Expansion"@ 20–100 °C" ranges become a temperature table
Specific heat capacity→Specific HeatJ/g·°C → J/kg·°C
Thermal conductivity→Isotropic Thermal ConductivityW/m·K
Electrical resistivity→ResistivityΩ·cm → Ω·m
Hardness, composition and thickness-dependent values go to a separate detailed XML8 properties
warning.txt
The panel warns: No elasticity (E and ν): cannot be used for stress analysis in ANSYS
Missing data is flagged before you use it
rule_1.txt
Specific grades work best. Series overview pages (e.g. "AISI 4000 Series Steel") only have averages for a whole family. You get a warning when you add one.
rule_2.txt
For ranges like "670 – 1240 MPa" the MatWeb average is used, or the midpoint. This is written into the material's description so you always know.
rule_3.txt
Add the same page again and the material is updated, not duplicated. Still, always check the properties before an engineering analysis.

One library. Always up to date.

Every material goes into a single file. Register it in ANSYS once; after that, just refresh.
